Mixcraft Users Speak Out

Well, I see people over there still complaining about the timing issue in 5.  Tracks moving out of time over the length of the track.  They're still blaming it on maxing out the CPU, even though one guy had already said his CPU is only hitting 25%-35% with a quad core.

For some reason, they still won't admit there's a problem, no matter who complains (or how many).  Hmmmmm.......

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's a shame really, it is a really easy to use program that has most features that folks would need, and at a price that most can afford...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agreed.  Wouldn't replace Reaper for me, or the others I use, but I do like it for certain things.  Would work well for a lot of people.  Just can't figure out why they won't fess up to a problem and work on it...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ya know it is the same with Beatcraft....if they would focus on that program & get the timing problem fixed they would have a winner on their hands.

I can create a full drum track in that program in less time than it takes me to get a 1/2 way scratch track in Hottstepper or Leaf Drums

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, I went over to read the forums and hit This Page  :o

Can ANYONE tell me what is wrong with that picture?!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sure it's just not part of the business model?  Other DAWS have little "issues" in their performance, but low and behold, there is a patch or plugin you can BUY to fix it!
Isn't that awesome!?

 :D

PT is a prime example... won't sort out track-to-track latancies till you drop the multiple hundreds on the upgrades and plugins.

To me some things are unforgiviable in software that is PAID for. On the top of the list is alignment of tracks. It's a multi-track recording program... like, WTF is it supposed to do...?
Exactly...

Rant off....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly, and what fires me up more than anything is when one of the lower priced products (of any kind) fails at something it's supposed to do and the author or one of the fanboys jumps in with "What do you expect for $$$?"

Well, whether it cost $5,000 or $5 I expect it to do what it said it would do when I paid for it.  Or they say you should have tried the demo, but you just can't find out everything you might need to from a demo.  And besides, why should I have to try the demo to find out it doesn't do what they said it would right above the download button.

Rant still on. 8) ;) :P

All in all, though, MC is a pretty good product for the money, but this timing thing makes it useless for a lot of work.  I know a lot of places hold out for plugin money, but I think in this case they just can't see the forest for the trees and won't admit they have a problem.  Oh well, they have their base that are happy with it, I guess...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I gave up using mixcraft a long time ago

I was always getting clicks and pops during recording with mixcraft 4.

Mixcraft sucks

I also had issues with recorded tracks moving.

I use Reaper now...Reaper is the best DAW ive tried so far.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Op Ed: Mixcraft has potential but currently it's like that a hot looking woman with really bad herpes. The folks from Acoustica lie and their favorite lie is to blame everything e.g. your computer, drivers, sound card,  plug ins, and your operating skills. They won't admit that in many ways Mixcraft is a buggy piece of shit.

beat craft is killing me!!!

I'm trying to program death metal drums into beatcraft. It sucks!!! I can't find a way to change tempo within the pattern so I'm trying to change time sigs etc...it just sucks. Anyone have any clue on what to do?

Re: beat craft is killing me!!!

Yeah Beatcraft blows... you have to do each part with seperate tempos in different pieces, so export a wave for each part with a different tempo.

I'd recommend EZdrummer for anything that needs metal drumming.

A Problem With DAWs

There are a lot of problems with DAWs. Many are unstable, most are difficult to learn and counter intuitive and they are digital so you can kiss that naturally warm sound of tubes and tape goodbye.  The problem I speak of is there is no standardization. They are all laid out differently and contain different nomenclature. I suspect this is to purposely make the learning curve hard so that users will stick with the DAW they know even if it has some serious short comings. You stick with what you know especially if you are a pro.

Creative people like artists and musicians are right brained whereas geeks are left brained and unfortunately it's geeks who design most software. Adobe PhotoShop's design was probably a combination of left and right brained people because it works well and is fairly intuitive.

DAWs force creative compromises. Let's say that you want to make meter changes in a song. For any geeks reading the meter changes mean going from one time signature to another like in the Beatles song We Can Work it Out where it goes from 4/4 to 6/8 and back 4/4. Slowing tempo and speeding it up again is not even possible with some DAWS. This is why at this point the best use of a DAW is for mastering but KISS Keep It Simple Stupid and mix with your ear but if you are a geek that's impossible.

I've heard music created by geeks and it's sterile and hardly clever. Today's music, well most of today's music is sterile and that is why the shit the Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber is popular but you many Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift songs can you sing or even want to sing?

A DAW in the hands of a geek is a very ugly thing. A DAW in the hand of a right brained person endowed with creativity and commonsense is frustration and and toxic to the creative process.

Geeks just don't get it and they will never get it and that's why DAWS tend to suck and as a consequence so does today's music.

Because this blog is called Mixcraft Sucks I will mention Mixcraft. The biggest disappoint about Mixcraft is that it is intuitive and them power it lacks would not be a bad thing if it were stable. Mixcraft is like a 90 horsepower sports car. You know that a Corvette will blow its doors off but you don't care because it is still fun to drive and may potentially even beat the Corvette on a very tight road course. But your 90 horsepower sports car uses more gas than the Corvette and is extremely unreliable. That's Mixcraft. Put the power and reliability of the Corvette into your underpowered and unreliable British sports car and you will have a real winner. Put the reliability of Reaper into Mixcraft and put the ease of use of Mixcraft into Reaper and you will have a DAW even the most analog oriented musician can live with. BTW, Corvettes are easy to operate, fun to drive and very reliable.

Neither a fixed Mixcraft or an intuitive Reaper will ever be the Cadillac of  DAWs but they can become the DAW of choice for most PC users and don't let the assholes from Acoustica tell you that the reason Mixcraft crashes, freezes and has horrible latency issues is because of a problem with your PC. Install Reaper and you won't have latency issues or crashes. Reaper has a horrible work flow and it's user hostile but it is very stable.

Currently I am testing Adobe Audition and so far it sucks as a recoding platform.

Since most DAW suck and since the companied who sell them are making obscene profits here is a little tool that will make trials last forever. It's called Run As Date.

NirSoft's RunAsDate is a small, free tool that lets you run applications using a different time and date stamp than your Windows system, yet without changing your Windows system time. It can change the date and time of multiple programs running simultaneously, each with different time and date settings. We can think of several reasons for wanting to do that (debugging log files, for example) so in any case, it's a useful capability to have around. However, it's not designed to extend shareware trial periods, which use different means of keeping track of such things.

Mixcraft vs Reaper vs Audacity

UPDATE: Mixcraft 6.1 as far as DAWS go is a very good DAW. 6 had issues typical of most of today's DAWS. Acoustica now makes a respectable DAW that is very easy to learn and it has a great workflow. While I don't recommend any DAW software I can safely say that if you like DAWs, Mixcraft 6.1 will not disappoint and Reaper still sucks.

CLICK HERE TO LEARN WHY TO AVOID TUNECORE

This is from Acoustic Guitar Forum

A newbie asks:

I'm looking at learning a DAW for solo acoustc guitar only. MIxcraft looks like it might be the most user-freindly; Reaper seems to get the best overall reviews, and Audacity is free. I'm leaning toward Mixcraft if that would greatly minimize the learning curve!
Any suggestions or comments?

Here are the responses:

Reaper ... by a long shot! You can evaluate a 100% functional, non-expiring copy of Reaper for free, and only register when you decide it's what you need (just $40 ... a real steal). I use it extensively. I've added EZDrummer for percussion, and it works seamlessly with Reaper.

Audacity doesn't come close.

For just solo guitar any of them will work, Audacity is not bad for one or 2 instruments but does not support VST effects very well.

Mixcraft has a timing problem, it drifts something bad as the song progresses....and yes, I am talking about the newest version also.

Reaper s much better, but a larger learning curve.....

There is another DAW that slips under the radar a lot by Zynewave called Podium that has a very workable Free version. I felt the included effects were fine, and it was pretty easy to figure out....plus the price is right!

Are you using Audacity 1.3.x beta when you have issues with the VST support? I'm getting the full UI with VSTs I've installed in the latest beta version, which is the one recommended by the devs.

I'd heard a glancing mention of the Mixcraft timing issue but foolishly _assumed_ that it only applied to MIDI. Sounds pretty annoying.

I came from Adobe Audition/Cool Edit Pro and my recording was limited to using the two track editor for a number of years. Man, was I doing things the hard way <grin>. The first time I tried REAPER I couldn't grasp the concept at all.

Just as I started transitioning to the multi-track non-destructive way of editing in AA I ran into a snag with Adobe's license validation process and it made me so mad I became determined to learn to use REAPER. Fortunately I found a number of free video tutorials which got me over the first humps and I made the switch without significant self-inflicted injury.

A long winded way of saying that the user created resources for REAPER are pretty wonderful and can help ease the learning a lot.

Fran

Reaper sucks. The native plugins are horrible and unusable and when you install a plugin Reaper crashes. Reaper is ugly, unstable and difficult to learn. Mixcraft wins by a mile. -Mark-

Mixcraft mentions timing of some computers here
http://www.acoustica.com/mixcraft/v4/help/hs1550.htm

Audacity is what I used originally, and it's ok for getting ideas down. However, REAPER is awesome, and relatively user friendly. It takes a little learning, but so does Audacity; and once you start learning REAPER you're already starting to put that time and knowledge into a program that professionals use.     Eli

I've used both and now I am using Mixcraft. Reaper crashes and freezes to the point it is worthless. Reaper is also bare bones and to get it to where it has enough plugins you have to pay through the ass because the free plugins and loops suck and many of the are not compatible with Reaper aka Raper.

Reaper is just some shitty software that remains in perpetual buggy beta mode.
