Mixcraft Users Speak Out

Well, I see people over there still complaining about the timing issue in 5.  Tracks moving out of time over the length of the track.  They're still blaming it on maxing out the CPU, even though one guy had already said his CPU is only hitting 25%-35% with a quad core.

For some reason, they still won't admit there's a problem, no matter who complains (or how many).  Hmmmmm.......

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's a shame really, it is a really easy to use program that has most features that folks would need, and at a price that most can afford...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agreed.  Wouldn't replace Reaper for me, or the others I use, but I do like it for certain things.  Would work well for a lot of people.  Just can't figure out why they won't fess up to a problem and work on it...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ya know it is the same with Beatcraft....if they would focus on that program & get the timing problem fixed they would have a winner on their hands.

I can create a full drum track in that program in less time than it takes me to get a 1/2 way scratch track in Hottstepper or Leaf Drums

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, I went over to read the forums and hit This Page  :o

Can ANYONE tell me what is wrong with that picture?!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sure it's just not part of the business model?  Other DAWS have little "issues" in their performance, but low and behold, there is a patch or plugin you can BUY to fix it!
Isn't that awesome!?

 :D

PT is a prime example... won't sort out track-to-track latancies till you drop the multiple hundreds on the upgrades and plugins.

To me some things are unforgiviable in software that is PAID for. On the top of the list is alignment of tracks. It's a multi-track recording program... like, WTF is it supposed to do...?
Exactly...

Rant off....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly, and what fires me up more than anything is when one of the lower priced products (of any kind) fails at something it's supposed to do and the author or one of the fanboys jumps in with "What do you expect for $$$?"

Well, whether it cost $5,000 or $5 I expect it to do what it said it would do when I paid for it.  Or they say you should have tried the demo, but you just can't find out everything you might need to from a demo.  And besides, why should I have to try the demo to find out it doesn't do what they said it would right above the download button.

Rant still on. 8) ;) :P

All in all, though, MC is a pretty good product for the money, but this timing thing makes it useless for a lot of work.  I know a lot of places hold out for plugin money, but I think in this case they just can't see the forest for the trees and won't admit they have a problem.  Oh well, they have their base that are happy with it, I guess...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I gave up using mixcraft a long time ago

I was always getting clicks and pops during recording with mixcraft 4.

Mixcraft sucks

I also had issues with recorded tracks moving.

I use Reaper now...Reaper is the best DAW ive tried so far.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Op Ed: Mixcraft has potential but currently it's like that a hot looking woman with really bad herpes. The folks from Acoustica lie and their favorite lie is to blame everything e.g. your computer, drivers, sound card,  plug ins, and your operating skills. They won't admit that in many ways Mixcraft is a buggy piece of shit.

Dave Mustaine On DAWs

Despite a vast array of advantages modern technology brought to musicians around the globe, many prominent music figures still point out at the negative aspects of various digital tools used for music recording and production. Among that crowd is also Megadeth mastermind Dave Mustaine, who recently discussed the current state of music during an interview with Caller.com. "I would have to say something that covers all forms of music right now," the frontman kicked off, "Digital audio workstations like Pro Tools, Cakewalk and Garage Band made it possible for a lot of people that can play a guitar or something like that, but they're not really musicians, they don't have it in their blood - so they can plug into a computer, pluck a couple chords, make a song and then fool the public."

As far as the subject of modern music technology is considered, it is worth noting that yet another major music figure, legendary Free/Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers, recently gave somewhat of a similar statement, saying that "the music industry is using too much technology."

Read more and watch Dave Mustaine HERE!

Mustaine got it right, DAWS  are destroying music because they allow geeks to make "music" and force it on people. There are reasons why Dave and others like him make good music. First of they have the raw talent and the drive and secondly they paid their dues.

Mixcraft 6 Crashing and Very Unstable

As much as I love working in Mixcraft 6...sometimes it really gets on my nerves,as I've had numerous instances of crashes(one of the big causes),is the Pultronic Tube EQ,so I can't use that effect anymore.
Also...I just recently installed Kontakt Player 4...along with Vir2 BASiS and yes,it is a huge program with built in effects, but it still does not entirely explain the current issue I'm having. My new VST as several bass instrument types,so along with one of the e.bass tracks I already implemented,I also wanted to add a synth bass track, but when I tried to load another Kontakt track, everything froze up and I had no other alternative, but to log off of my computer.

I have a very capable computer, that has a 2.80Ghz 6 core processor,8GB of RAM with a 1TB HD and in my current project,I have only 5 tracks in it,thus far(one of them being a video track).

I should also mention that I have another PC with roughly half the power of this PC and I can easily run 3 to 4 Kontakt tracks(as well as some other VST's and I can furnish a 8 track song, without any hiccups or glitches of any kind.

But on this PC,there's no way I can run that much in Mixcraft 6.I don't experience any pops or crackles in Mixcraft...so what the hell is going on?Perhaps it's merely the limitations of a $75 DAW?

If that's the case,I would gladly purchase an upgraded version of Mixcraft 6,just to get this sh*t to stop....please...any input on this matter would be appreciated!

Thanks,

-Thom

Hi,

Duplicate the problem, then quit Mixcraft and send us your mixcraft-log.txt file, which is located in this folder:

%appdata%\Acoustica\Mixcraft

Another way to find it is to click on the Windows Start Menu, select All Programs, then Acoustica Mixcraft 6 (or 5) and finally Logs. Submit an Acoustica Support Request and attach the log file along with a brief description of the problem.

I suspect this is a system configuration issue.

You only mention about half of your system specs.... What OS? Is it 32 or 64 bit?

A 1 TB HD... Are you saying you have only one hard drive, and everything is on it? (FYI -- A DAW - especially one running resource-intensive VSTs - should have at least two separate drives: one for OS and programs, the other for audio and samples).

Vir2 instruments (BaSis and Mojo) are known for being quality instruments - at the cost of also being cpu-intensive. If your system isn't set up properly - choice of components or correct optimization settings - you will have problems.

How about we make sure your basic setup is "DAW-ready", and the settings are correct, before blaming the $75 Mixcraft? :?

Notice that this weasel blames the computer. WHAT A BITCH!

Windows 7,64bit.The hard drive size is not the problem, because I only have 179GB worth of content on it(my other PC is only a 500GB HD & only a dual core processor with 4GB of RAM and I have at least the same amount of HD space used up on that one) and it runs much better.

Aside from configuring audio interface settings,I've never had to "optimize" my PC with any other DAW I have, but I look into the tutorial videos & try to gain some insight into the problem.

Thanks for your input.

It's not the hard drive data size that's the issue. Basically, you want more than one drive, so that they can efficiently divide up the various read/write/streaming tasks. It's all explained here:

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may05/articles/pcmusician.htm

Also, is this a desktop or laptop? What about the "other" PC you are referring to?

What is your audio interface/sound card?

Both of this guy's machines are running more sophisticated software. Both are laptops and the guy is a gamer so he is running good sound cards. One of his desktops is $2500.  He is also running a Presonus interface which are an industry standard interfaces.

Greg,

The first time my Mixcraft 6 crashed, was due to the Pultronic Tube EQ and this was before I had Kontakt 4 & the subsequent VST installed.
This was about a week ago & I never received a reply on this report.

The Pultronic VST issue is not nearly as important to me as the Kontakt VST issue and unfortunately, there's no crash log I can send.
Reason being,is that when I tried to insert a 2nd Kontakt track, everything freezes up and I can do nothing but log off Windows & when I do this,Mixcraft 6 justs disappears without a crash window.

I'll look into the video tutorials...thanks for your assistance,

-Thom

Both PC's are desktops. The larger & more powerful of the two,is a Cyberpower Apevia(Gamer Dragon) computer, that is specifically designed for gaming and/or video production.
This PC has a Presonus AudioBox 44VSL interface.

My other PC the smaller one,is a Compaq Presario; AMD 2.80Ghz dual core,3GB of RAM,500GB HD,64 bit with Windows 7.
I have exactly 200GB of used space on it currently and my Presonus S1 DAW with NI Komplete 6 and I also have a Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum program on it,& it all runs fine(I have a NI Audio Kontrol 1 audio interface installed).

I don't have Mixcraft 6 installed on the Compaq...but I strongly suspect I would have even a larger problem running Mixcraft on the Compaq.

The more I think about it,I suspect that a program like Mixcraft running video & multitrack audio/midi all at the same time,is the real problem(I sincerely hope I am dead wrong on this assumption),because I just don't have the $2500 to spend on this monster; http://www.musiccomputing.com/coremc

I trust SoundOnSound's reviews implicitly and it's an interesting article, but I don't have the coin to spend on an external HD as I am completely tapped out & will be for a few months.

Hi,

I might be able to make some more specific suggestions after taking a look at your log file. The next time Mixcraft does something "unstable," quit Mixcraft and send us your mixcraft-log.txt file, which is located in this folder:

%appdata%\Acoustica\Mixcraft

Another way to find it is to click on the Windows Start Menu, select All Programs, then Acoustica Mixcraft 6 (or 5) and finally Logs. Submit an Acoustica Support Request and attach the log file along with a brief description of the problem.

Hi, crashing with the tube FX i used to have regularly, I found that the crashes where being caused by an overload (Red lining), if you have the patience, play back your track until it crashes, then set a loop around that area, go to your mixer and look out for any tracks red lining. Sometimes this can be caused, weirdly enough, by having a low pass cutoff jump from any value to 0 from two separate block of notes, but anyhow, hope that fixes it.

Why do all DAW's suck?

The following is from GearSlutz Read more here

Why is it that every DAW I try seems to have MAJOR drawbacks and functionality issues:

Pro Tools LE:
  • Obvious limitations on track counts, busses, I/O, ADC, etc.
Pro Tools HD:
  • Even with PT8, the MIDI is still pretty sub par.... and considering that most modern composers are using MIDI... well.... this pretty much takes both HD and LE off the usable list
  • The ADC seems to be the worst out of any app that has it
  • Even HD has the ******** I/O limitations on which hardware you can use.

Logic:
  • The worst audio editing out there bar none. I.E., no dedicated trim tool... so.. no way to trim a region unless you scroll all the way to the edge, no way to make slip edits, no dedicated fade tool, you're simply STUCK with the "dumb" tool, etc.
  • No way to use the fade tool on multiple tracks ?! Amazing!!
  • No track based takes (I.E., playlists, layers, etc.)
  • No simple MIDI merge command for recording (merge with selected layers doesn't count at all)
  • No way to view both the Left and Right sides of a stereo waveform.. what am I even seeing here.. is this a mono summed version??
  • Regardless of having "no overlap" selected.. you still get overlapping regions when recording/punching in.. and well... what you see isn't always what you get... MIND ****!
  • No way to independently pan an aux send... what the...... is this 1972??

Digital Performer:

  • No absolute grid.. makes editing MIDI quite the hassle....
  • A "split notes" feature that only works when all the notes of all the chords have quantized attacks
  • A different tool for EVERY edit function for MIDI... separate tool for drawing notes.. separate tool for extending lengths.. separate tool for velocity, etc. You can REALLY tell that the bulk of the MIDI features in DP are quite OLD.
  • No way to select tracks... or even see which tracks are selected in the mixer
  • No MIDI learn function for plugins.. unless the plugin comes with MIDI learn already built in.
  • No way to assign the same plugin across multiple tracks simultaneously .. or assign the same send to multiple tracks simultaneously
  • All that said.. this is by far the best app for me at the moment..... still frustrating though....

Ableton Live
  • No way to create smooth, gradual tempo changes
  • No real way to create takes, comp takes, etc. without major workarounds
  • No real way to work in a linear fashion unless you're OK only the most basic of commands
  • Only the most simple of MIDI commands and edit possibilities
  • Built for DJ's and Loop-Junkies.... and I should just accept it......

Studio One
  • Again.. no way to create smooth, gradual tempo changes
  • A fairly odd way of dealing with automation for busses (who doesn't use busses!)
  • Again... only the most simple of MIDI edit commands
  • OK... it's a new DAW... so I'll be easy

Reaper
  • The worst implementation of rewire,... even though I have to hand it to them for allowing Reaper to work as a Rewire Slave
  • Again... only the simple MIDI editing commands as found in Studio One, Live, etc.
  • No track based takes

Maybe I should try Cubase???? Ed.... No you shouldn't!!!!

Can someone build a proper DAW... it's 2013...

How is it that every DAW out there has major flaws and issues.

Pro tools - cpu hog, VSt's don't work, RTAS instruments barely work, no drum pad sampler, not good for produciton, only mixing.

Logic - (haven't used it much) a pain to look at, everything is so small and cluttered

Ableton - horrendous use of CPU, one core per track, track view is laughable, mix view is laughable. Crashes constantly.

FL Studio - again, horrible GUI. Way too small. Way too cluttered. Just sucks.

These are the only ones I've used. But seriously are these manufacturers that hard of hearing? I mean, people complain about their software non-stop and all they do is make stupid updates about things that didn't even bother us in the first place. I'm hearing now that Ableton is coming out with version 9 and they changed the browser (wtf?) and it is even more of a CPU hog and it probably will still wrongly display the CPU % as before, only worse.

Come on developers, get your sh*t together and stop making garbage.

beat craft is killing me!!!

I'm trying to program death metal drums into beatcraft. It sucks!!! I can't find a way to change tempo within the pattern so I'm trying to change time sigs etc...it just sucks. Anyone have any clue on what to do?

Re: beat craft is killing me!!!

Yeah Beatcraft blows... you have to do each part with seperate tempos in different pieces, so export a wave for each part with a different tempo.

I'd recommend EZdrummer for anything that needs metal drumming.
